Life Happens While…

Repost from 2012:

A family member and I had not seen each other in eighteen months. We came together again at the rehearsal dinner of a wedding. It felt good to be close,  a joy to catch up.

Yet, within minutes their cell phone sounded and a conversation was had with someone else. They talked about the dinner, what they had been up to, made plans to get together later.

This scenario continued, one call after another, until the dinner was over. No apology.

Phone 3(I think the rehearsal dinner should be included also)

I don’t think the problem is cell phones, ipads, etc. It is people—those who allow modern technology to take the place of human contact.

There is a TV ad where mom is on the computer and the kids come into the room. Mom raises her hand to wave “Hi” and keeps typing. The voice on the TV says, “You can multitask, take care of the kids and…” The kids walk away.

Maybe others can multitask but it doesn’t work for me. My brain can only focus on one thing at a time.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my computer. I’m burnin’ up the keyboard by 5:30 every morning. Many days I spend hours at my desk. Unless…

Sister Jen has the day off from work. If she is home, I do what I have to and turn off the PC. Sometime we go out to breakfast, do some grocery shopping, hang out on the porch laughing at the squirrels.

If granddaughter Brittany is here, I do the same. She inherited my first PC and plays games until I’m done. After that it’s fun time. We chase one another around the house, go to the store, read stories, draw, go for walks, play games.

I read that in 1957 John Allen Saunders wrote, “Life is what happens to you while you’re making other plans.” In 1980, John Lennon used the quote in a song.

As much as I love to write, zip through the day at my desktop, it will never mean more to me than the people in my life.
