“Please don’t make any noise,” I begged as I sneaked up the trellis on the side of the car port. Still, there was this one board that couldn’t help itself.
I was only twelve and didn’t weigh much but that darn board didn’t care; it could feel you comin’ and start hollerin’ like a baby.
Onto the roof I climbed and scooted over near of the corners. There were two things goin’ on that night … uh, three actually.
- The moon was shinin’ like a bright new penny
- It was a special summer night
- No one else was on the roof
There was nothin’ particular goin’ on in my brain, just enjoying the night and the moon and the stars … all of God’s wonderful heavens that He is so good to share with me. I was taken away in all the wonderment.
And that’s when it happened…
The whole thing took place in one swift motion. A shadow moved off to my right, as I turned it was on me real quick, like a spider. The kiss landed on my cheek and just like that the spider flew down the trellis.
I leaped up as he ran across the yard. It was the boy on the next street. We rode the school bus together every day. I never knew.
From then on we did that “eyes lookin’ down thing”…
But never spoke of what happened.
May Your Glass Always Be Half Full
