Baby Olympian

Nur Suryani raised the 10-meter air rifle, placed her finger on the trigger and whispered…

“Mommy is going to shoot here.”

What the hey! This is the Olympics, what the heck is going on here?

What has happened is that Nur Suryani Taibi is pregnant AND in the Olympics. Yep, you read it right. Maybe, like me, you didn’t know expectant moms can take part in certain Olympic events.

There are a few more pregnant moms struttin’ their stuff also, only none as far along as Nur Suryani. Her belly is huge; she is nearly eight months along with baby Dayana, which had Coach Natalia Zhukova a nervous wreck.

She and Suryani’s husband, Marhazli Mhotar are terrified, anything could go wrong, the Olympian might go into labor on the plane. Marhazli is the worry wart in the family; he doesn’t even want Suryani to have natural child-birth, wants her to have a cesarean.

When Suryani discovered she was pregnant it was an easy decision; she would be a champion for two. Well, not exactly a hot-shot, but it doesn’t matter. The “soon-to-be mom” is there, she made it to the Olympics.

As luck would have it, Suryani’s event was in the first hour of the first day. She had little hope of a win, but that’s okay. It was about the trying, the challenge to herself, to be a part of the Olympics.

“I think that I can do whatever I want to because I’m quite stubborn,” she says softly. “Anything I want to do, I will do.”

Husband Marhazli is also head-strong; he didn’t want his wife to take chances with this pregnancy. Yet there he was looking on as Suryani competed in the 10-meter air rifle event.

“I’m more stubborn than him,” she laughs.

Suryani didn’t make the cut; she was 34th in the qualifying round. Still, she is thrilled. Suryani has improved her rank of 47th in the world in the 10m air rifle. The almost mom didn’t expect to win a medal; her goal was to be an athlete in the Olympics.

And she did it.

Suryani has won the gold.
