To the Struggle Against World Terrorism:
Zurab Tsereteli watched in horror at the attack on the Twin Towers; his eyes welled-up at the pain and suffering he witnessed.
On the way to work at the Academy of Art, he passed the American Embassy where a crowd had gathered to mourn. The artist was saddened by their tears and sorrow.
Zurab traveled to Ground Zero, steam still rose from the ruins. He decided to create a memorial in honor of the victims; a tear would be the image. Only Zurab did not want to build on top of the sacred site.
He found a place nearby in Bayonne, New Jersey where the memorial could rise up on the waterfront.
The bronze monument has a jagged, 4-ton nickel tear through the center. The victim’s names are inscribed on granite name plates at the base. And … it is aligned with the Statue of Liberty.
