Trading Your Life for Love

I remember when most people hated blind dates. Nowadays it’s common practice via the Internet.

There are these websites that will hook us up with a new partner just about guaranteed to make us swoon—with the most well-known sites being eHarmony and

Only now went and got itself into trouble, which was bound to happen sooner or later.

Here’s the mishap:

Jane Doe took a long time signing onto, but felt it was worth it when she met  Alan Wurtzel. They hit it off right from the start. The very first date gave her a feeling of a promise fulfilled.

Then came that second date, when Alan turned into a pervert. They were at Jane’s house—all nice and cozy like—and he started to force her to do things against her will. Sexual things that she wouldn’t normally do.

Poor Jane, she was hysterical, emotionally and physically. Still the woman had courage, she was going to stand up and do something. Sooo…

First, “I looked up his name and saw that he had a bad past.” What she found is that Alan Wurtzel is a sexual predator, who has multiple sexual convictions.

On April 13 she filed a lawsuit and went public. That’s when Jane Doe morphed into Carole Markin, Harvard graduate, film and TV producer.

Not only that, courageous Carole is a one-woman crusader, wants to make sure this doesn’t happen to other online daters.

The “Erin Brockovich of Online Dating” has spoken out on the Today show and Good Morning America. She wants everyone to know about the Jane Doe v. suit, which will force the website to change their policy to make it safer for its members.

In response, has promised to begin cross-referencing members against the National Sex Offenders Registry.

In the meantime, Alan Paul Wurtzel isn’t standing by whistlin’ Dixie. He has an attorney who claims his client doesn’t know what the hoopla is all about. Alan says (like they always do) that the lovey-dovey was mutual.

Carol and Alan will be going to fist city in a trial on April 26, 2011.

Here’s my problem with all of this:

Our first responsibility in life is to oneself. With today’s technology, I’m not going on a blind date through a website before checking this dude out nine-ways-to-Sunday.

If I don’t have a computer, there is always the library. If I don’t know how to use it, they will help me.

Ain’t nobody else’s responsibility to look out for me. A lick o’ common sense will warn me not to take a pig in a poke.

As for Jane Doe. If you check out the link above the source reveals it was she who wrote the press release, resume and all.
