If you haven’t seen Maxine this is your chance. This little ol’ lady is crass, crabby and funny. She doesn’t care what anybody thinks, Maxine spits it out … her way. I just love this woman, makes me think of myself if you cross me
John Wagner created Maxine in 1986, when Hallmark added the Shoebox Greetings division. He said she was inspired by his mother, maiden aunts and grandmother.
“Cartoonists are sensitive to the insanities of the world; we just try to humanize them,” John declares. “If Maxine can get a laugh out of someone who feels lonely or someone who is getting older and hates the thought of another birthday, or if she can make someone chuckle about stressful interpersonal relationships, then I’m happy. Putting a smile on someone’s face is what it’s all about.”
I know you’re wondering how Maxine got her name. Well, first the people at Shoebox called her “John Wagner’s old lady,” which John said was bound to get him in trouble with his wife. So, the Shoebox team held a contest among themselves and three suggested the name Maxine. John believes the name is perfect.
